I was going for the look of an old engraving here. The gondolier was isolated and turned into a line drawing, then a new background (a picture of the Rialto bridge I took many years ago) was similarly transformed. The two were then combined using a mask on the background to make the gondolier appear in the foreground. The image was then tinted using a gradiant.
