Here I was trying to colorize the image without hand tinting. I started by using the cutout filter to reduce the levels of tone, then selected and copied areas of the picture to different layers -- the gondola, water, distant buildings, vaporetto and so on. Each of these layers was then colored using a different gradiant adjustment. The sky was selected seperately and filled with a uniform color.
