While I was looking at the original image, the various spheres with odd projections reminded me of Sputnik and other satellites and led to this image. I reconstructed one of the spheres, then duplicated, resized, rotated, shaded and colored the copies. The antennas are just lines with a bevel style -- I added dark areas to the point they connect to the sphere's surface to simulate the joint. The planet image is from NASA. The sun is a lens flare layer. The stars are texture>grain>sprinkles.
