The compressed version of Image 2 obscured the titles of the books, so this 'close-up' was created to reveal them:

'The Pearl' was visible in the earlier version. I borrowed Hammett's Sam Spade to conduct the investigation, although he probably wouldn't have used a post-it.

The magnifying glass is a modified Photo Object -- the magnified 'view' through the glass was created by cropping a section of the original image to fit and using the liquify bloat tool. The marble desktop is a fill pattern.
